POM Inc. President and CEO Seth “Skeeter” Ward II, 60, died May 1, 2013, at his home in Little Rock, AR. He had owned and operated the Russellville, AR-based company since 1980. The oldest manufacturer of parking meter systems in the world, its first meter was introduced in 1935.

Skeeter Ward, the son of a WWII fighter pilot, also was an accomplished aviator. “Despite close encounters with thunderstorms, lost engines, and other airborne peril, he always brought his passengers home safely, albeit terrified on occasion,” his obituary said. He commuted daily from home to office in his private plane.
A lifelong tinkerer, his mechanical ingenuity was said to be boundless. Skeeter patented numerous inventions, most notably the world’s first solar-powered parking meter. “Lesser-known inventions include custom can-lights, eyeglass holders and one-of-a-kind gardening items,” the obituary said.
Survivors include Anne Balch Ward, his wife of 38 years; two sons, Seth Ward III and James Phillip Ward; daughter Katharine Ward Hargis; three grandchildren;and two sisters.
