Mr. Clyde Michael Penny, 68, died on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. Born, November 4, 1952 in Asheboro, NC. Michael was a son of the late Clyde C. and Iris Lowdermilk Penny. Mr. Penny was the Director of Ground Transportation with Charlotte Douglas International Airport and served several terms on the International Parking Institute’s Board of Directors. Michael was a founding member of the Carolinas Parking Association where he served multiple terms as the association’s president plus he was a member of the first IPI CAPP graduating class. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw, SC. He is survived by his wife Dru, his son Austin, his grandson Jack and brother Jim.
Michael loved music, disc golf, hiking and camping and his many, many friends. Michael was also an avid UNC Tar Heel Fan and enjoyed basketball and soccer. He was involved with Rock Hill Parks and Recreation and received the Ray Warner Coach Award.
Michael and I went way back. He and I attended college together at UNC-Charlotte and ran many frisbee tournaments together over the years and later many regional parking conferences in the Carolinas. We also worked together at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport where we both started our parking careers. Michael was one of the most gentle and generous souls I have ever met. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. Barbara Chance called Michael “a true gentleman, in the best sense of the word.”
Michael, you will be missed!
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
