MaaS and the Changing Face of Mobility
The shift towards Mobility as a Service (MaaS) comes on the back of changing public perceptions, with people increasingly viewing transport as something that they purchase upon demand and as a personalised mobility experience. This trend is underpinned by new mobility service providers such as ride-sharing and e-hailing services, bike- and car-sharing programs, as well as on-demand bus services.
ERTICO, a private-public partnership of 120 members from the mobility sector, works toward the development of a pan-European MaaS service to ensure the seamless use of mobility in Europe. With this aim in mind, ERTICO has gathered 45 companies and organizations in one Innovation Platform to work towards making seamless mobility a reality.
“The real beauty of Mobility as a Service is that it is now the end-user, the passenger, who decides. For the first time in the history of transport, it is not the user who should adapt his / her mobility behavior based on the supply, but instead there are services responding to our actual mobility needs – and not only those of an anonymous average user. This is enabled by advanced technical solutions and synergetic co-existence of innovative and established transport services. By combining various transport services we can provide attractive mobility options also for those whose needs haven’t been fulfilled by traditional public transit services. Integration here is the key word,” says Piia Karjalainen, coordinator of the MaaS Alliance at ERTICO – ITS Europe.
MaaS is one of the key topics at this year’s ITS World Congress, which will run from 17 to 21 September 2018 at the Bella Centre in Copenhagen. ITS is the world’s largest international congress for intelligent transport systems (ITS) and, this year the Congress expects to welcome more than 4,000 delegates, 10,000 attendees and 400 exhibitors from around the world.

Chauntry Brings Parking Reservations Technology To San Diego International Airport
Parking just become easier and more convenient at San Diego International Airport with the introduction of Chauntry’s pioneering parking reservations platform. The Chauntry reservations platform allows travelers to reserve and pay for parking before traveling to the airport, eliminating the uncertainty that travelers often experience when looking for parking close to their terminals.
“Being able to reserve parking before leaving for the airport is an invaluable amenity for travelers,” said Theresa Hughes, Chief Executive Officer of Chauntry. “Traveling can be stressful enough without having to worry about whether you’ll be able to find a parking space and get into the terminal quickly to make your flight. The Chauntry parking reservations platform eliminates that stress.”
San Diego International Airport becomes the first airport in the United States to offer travelers Chauntry’s Parkspace v. 18, the world’s most advanced parking reservations platform. The platform allows travelers to reserve and pay for a space in the parking facility that is closest to their terminal. After pre-booking the traveler is issued a barcode, which can be printed or sent to a smart device for use when entering and exiting the garage. Frequent travelers are also able to create a user account, which includes personal and payment information, to provide a quicker and more convenient pre-booking experience when traveling in the future. The user interface allows quick and seamless integration into the Chauntry platform, and parkers can use it on any device.
Parking: The Oft Overlooked Asset in Business Real Estate
Far to often parking is an afterthought when commercial property owners are reviewing their assets. Parking services are often treated as commodities rather than what they really are, revenue generating assets! All too often we are asked for the lowest price possible when submitting proposals for parking management services, in effect commoditizing the parking aspect of the asset.
Parking garages are assets that can generate significant revenues for owners. Parking facilities associated with office buildings can enhance the overall cash flow of that asset when operated in a manor that encourages aggressive management through marketing, technology use, and comprehensive reviews of tenant lease obligations as well as other areas. Adding sustainable revenue streams can increase the long-term cap rate on your asset.
Office markets in the Southeast continue to deliver new parking needs. In Miami alone, it is expected that over 500,000 square feet of new office product will be delivered in 2018 ”Blanca CRE Q1 Report”. In Atlanta, construction started on 350,000 square feet in Midtown alone in Q1. These new office spaces will create new parking demands and new parking revenues for owners.
With an estimated 120 million plus Americans driving to work every day, there is significant revenue opportunities to consider when looking at your parking asset. Helping owners achieve the maximum return from their parking asset when conducting due diligence on a potential purchase or new development is what we do.
Parking is not a commodity. It is an asset.
