Not a Shoupista and Don’t have time to read the book?

Don Shoup’s tome can be some rough slogging. I recommend that you read the first 10 pages of each chapter and then go back and read the rest if you are interested in the back up documentation. The concept is easy –

  1. Set the right price for curb parking (high enough to leave one space free per block face)
  2. Return Revenue to Pay for Local Public Services
  3. Remove minimum parking requirements

Before you go off on me, take 10 minutes and read Shoup’s recent summary of his ideas written for the Cato institute here.

I know there are real world issues, and Shoup thinks in the macro and not the micro, but with some ‘adjustments’ most of the above can work.
