Newcastle City Council in Australia has launched a state-first parking app to coincide with the Broadmeadow stadium park and ride service’s free window closing. The shuttle service attracts a $2.20 fee per day now, which can be paid with the EasyPark app designed to let commuters pay without having to return to the meter. It will help manage parking spaces across the local government area. “I’m thrilled to say that with the launch of the EasyPark app, the City of Newcastle is on the way to relegating parking meters to the dustbin of history,” lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

A garage billed as Northern California’s first fully automated parking structure has opened in Oakland. People drive up, drop off the car and walk away. A machine lifts the car to one of the 39 spaces in the seven-level structure. Scott Gable, CEO of Oakland’s CityLift Parking, which worked on the garage in conjunction with Oakland company Signature Development, said the structure cost about $45,000 per space and would save on greenhouse gas emissions. That’s partly because cars won’t drive around in it. It also uses less material per space than other garages, because the cars can fit more compactly. Automation is already popular in Europe and Asia, and “we think this is the future of parking,” Gable said. Starting in April, cars will be able to park in the garage — the Hive Parking Structure near Broadway and 24th Street — at night as well as during the day.

Beginning March 1, Downtown Pensacola and Premium Parking, a New Orleans, Louisiana based parking management provider, will transition to a new digital parking management platform for Downtown Pensacola’s on-street, public lots, and garage parking operations. The team will oversee operations in the City of Pensacola, Florida and the Gulf Coast. Downtown Pensacola will also launch Premium’s mobile payment solutions on its paid parking footprint, offering locals and visitors easy ways to pay by phone-via text or mobile app-using their license plate. Additionally, parkers can continue to use traditional payment methods via local pay machines. As part of the transition, Downtown Pensacola will install new, customer-friendly signage that showcases the new ways to pay.
