John Hammerschlag Joins University of Illinois Advisory Board

Chicago’s John Hammerschlag has been selected to join the Advisory Board for the Stuart Handler Department of Real Estate, College of Business Administration of the University of Illinois Chicago. Stuart Handler said: “John’s involvement in parking, a niche sector in real estate, but a vital part of every major platform in our industry, will add to our discussion of the best practices, trends, and other developments happening in real estate today so the department’s faculty can integrate them into their curricula and teaching.”

Hammerschlag has built a parking investment and advisory business which fills a specific niche.

In 2020, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Business Administration announced the opening of its fifth academic department. The Stuart Handler Department of Real Estate joins the accounting, finance, information and decision sciences and managerial studies departments in serving the college’s more than 3,000 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. 

The opportunity to establish the department would not have been possible without the tremendous generosity of Stuart Handler, CEO of TLC Management Co., an award-winning, full-service Chicagoland leasing and management company. Handler’s monetary donation to the progression of UIC Business and its students is the second highest ever received by the college and the second named department on campus. “I want to give people in Chicago and at UIC — a population that largely comes from families who have immigrated to this country — a chance to have a stake in the real estate in their neighborhoods,” Handler said. “This a great opportunity for graduates of the department to find jobs in this vital industry.”

Having worked in and outside of Chicago for more than four decades in the parking industry as an owner, developer, investor, asset manager, advisor, and operator, John Hammerschlag has built a parking investment and advisory business which fills a specific niche. His outlook is unique in that he is independent and understands the dynamics of the local and national parking markets, the nature of parking competition, the players involved, and, as an owner, he also appreciates financial risk. 

Since 1995, Hammerschlag & Co. has advised developers, institutional and individual real estate owners, investors, lenders, municipalities, and managers of real estate assets on a national basis. Over the past twenty-five years, Hammerschlag’s role as investor and acquirer of parking assets has grown. As a result, the company provides asset management of third-party parking operators for the properties under its sponsorship. This tangible knowledge as an owner, developer, investor, and asset manager directly benefits Hammerschlag’s advisory clients. Before entering the parking industry, Mr. Hammerschlag served as a commercial lending officer for Citibank in New York City from 1973 to 1976. His academic credentials include an MBA from the University of Chicago (1973) and a BSE from the University of Michigan (1970).
