The City of Sarasota is conflicted about adding meters to the downtown area. They describe the problem — not enough parking for shoppers, and they also describe the issue — many downtown workers are taking the parking spaces. However they lack the political will to put in the solution — charge enough for parking to create a few empty spaces.
I love the last line of the story:
Even though meters could help businesses, Mayor Fredd "Glossie" Atkins did not want to force meters on downtown merchants.
"I’m really concerned about how this will work out," he said.
"Why should I take the hits for putting in meters when they don’t want
Come on Mr. Mayor, get some courage and do what is right. Read the article, listen to the experts like Phil Oropesta and Don Shoup. You have the experts telling you what to do. Do it.
Oh yes, where are the quotes from the majority of the board of commissioners that backed pay parking downtown. Note that only those opposed were quoted on this "divisive" issue. If its so "divisive" where are the folks on the other side.
