My buddy Chris has come on strong — Here‘s the link to his comments and my response. This is the kind of dialogue we need.
Don Shoup’s book is 700 pages long and has a lot of twists and turns, however it can be thought of in simple, non academic, terms. We do need to get some clarity.

A lot of people may not agree with everything Dr Shoup says, but he is certainly qualified to present a theory that deserves serious consideration. Plus it’s “theory”, there will always be a need for adjustments to arrive at the optimum plan for each market in which it is applied. Anybody that’s been in this business for more than a few weeks knows that it’s always a fluid situation that requires constant monitoring, whether it’s cash control or operating procedures. What works perfectly in New York may fail spectacularly in Charlotte, what succeeds in the summer might be a disaster in the winter, best practices for LA might cause incredible headaches in Miami, etc, etc.
