I shake my head…I thought they were so NICE in Canada

The Toronto Parking Authority and its union are at loggerheads over a new contract. And the local press is helping out. Read the article here.

The headline:

Parking lot chaos feared

Attendants union, management at city operations race to Dec. 20 deadline

If you read the story you discover that the union is saying that they will strike just before Christmas and parking chaos will ensue. However the TPA says that they are going to staff the garages with management personnel and that the strike will be transparent to the parking public. Most garages in Toronto are Pay on Foot, so it would seem that the Authority is right.

However the “If it bleeds, it leads” attitude of the media would stress “chaos” rather than “business as usual.”

I also wonder at the unions. They want more and more, but are they providing more and more. In most cases, they are looking for retirement and benefit programs.

My guess is that if the TPA said that on the 20th they needed 100 people to work, 1000 would show up on their door step.

This is not a good time for unions to start making demands.
