Ponies but no Sheepdogs

I’m travelling this week and next on a ship “In the Wake of the Vikings”. We started in Bergen, Norway, and are now in the Shetland Islands. From here its the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and a couple of stops in Canada. Just like Eric the Red back around 950 or so.

The Shetland Islands are off the coast of Scotland, and are the northernmost part of the British Isles. They are the home of about 7500 people and a quarter of a million sheep. They are also the home of Shetland Ponies, and Shetland Sheepdogs, or Shelties.

This little guy was only 17 weeks old, but at full size, just over 3 feet tall. Just to prove I was there:

However, the guide told us there were no Shelties on the Shetland Islands, except for a few pets. I have one of the critters at home and was going to regale her with stories of her homeland. Oh well. Maybe I can get around that with a dog bisket and a good scratch.

And no, the following isn’t another self portrait, although I’m sure some wags in our industry think so:

More from the Wake of the Vikings later. You do have something to look foward to. I’m being given a tour of the municipal parking operation in downtown Reykjavík
