UCLA Fielding School of Public Health researchers published a study finding significantly higher levels of fine particulate matter (PM) in the air near electric vehicle fast-charging stations compared to urban sites without charging stations. The study, published in Environment International, examined air quality at 50 direct current fast charging (DCFC) stations across 47 cities in Los Angeles County. At charging stations, daily concentrations of particles 2.5 micrometers or smaller in diameter ranged from 7.3 to 39.0 micrograms per cubic meter, while urban sites without fast-charging stations measured only 3.6 to 12.4 micrograms per cubic meter. Researchers believe the particles likely come from resuspension around DCFC power cabinets, where cooling fans designed to prevent electronics from overheating can stir up dust and particles from internal surfaces.
