Terry McGann of McGann Associates, also known as McGann Software Systems, and later, Amano McGann, passed away at home with family on September 1.
Starting as a Minneapolis-area parking equipment installer for Cincinnati Time in 1982, Terry’s company was the first to successfully bring parking management software to the commodity personal computers of the late 1980s. The company continued to grow throughout the 1990s, as the McGann team transitioned to the then-new Windows operating system. McGann also expanded its reach into multiple cities from coast to coast to build upon the installation and servicing business.
In 2007, longtime partner Amano Inc. agreed to acquire McGann, forming Amano McGann, the name by which the company continues to operate today. Terry stayed on with Amano McGann until his retirement in 2010.
As an employer, Terry was “well-known for his generosity toward his employees, financially and in work-life balance,” said his son, Brian McGann, a senior consultant for Walker Consultants. “There was almost no turnover of key employees due to that approach. He said that he so enjoyed working at his own company that the long hours building on his successes were many of his most enjoyable times.”
An impeccable dresser, Terry always wore a suit and tie to the office, even after most others had transitioned to casual wear. Eventually, he switched to bow ties, making that his trademark look.
In his spare time, Terry often “played hard” too. “He ran numerous marathons, skied, biked, rode motorcycles, and was a great father to his four children,” Brian said. “‘Unique’ is a word used too often but applies well to Terry. His wit, caring, and generosity will be missed by all who knew him.”
A memorial service will be held in his honor on Friday, September 19, at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
